A wedding is not one visit. Families come months ahead, look, go home, talk about it, and come back — sometimes four or five times before anything is decided. The shop is used to that and expects it.

Come with a budget rather than a design. It is easier to work from what a family can spend towards a set that suits the bride than the other way around, and nobody has to be told no at the end of it.

What to bring the first time

• Roughly what the family wants to spend, in total
• Which pieces are must-haves and which are optional
• The wedding date, so making time can be worked backwards from it
• Any old gold that is going into the making

Pieces with photographs are in the catalogue. What is in the shop is always more than what is photographed — if you have seen something elsewhere, bring the picture in and ask.
